When Words Hurt: Choosing Kindness in a World of Online Criticism

Social media has given us incredible opportunities to connect with people from around the world. We can share our stories, celebrate milestones, promote our work, and encourage one another.

Unfortunately, it has also become a place where some people feel comfortable leaving unkind and hurtful comments.

Like many content creators, I have experienced this myself. While most of the people who visit my pages are kind and supportive, there have been times when someone has chosen criticism over compassion.

Hurtful words can stay with us longer than we would like, especially when we have poured our hearts into something we created.

You Never Know Someone’s Story

One thing I try to remember is that we never truly know what another person is going through. Behind every profile is a human being with hopes, struggles, and feelings. A single harsh comment may seem insignificant to the person writing it, but it can deeply affect the person receiving it.

That is why kindness matters.

It’s Easy to Criticize

Creating something takes courage. Whether it’s writing a book, sharing artwork, posting a photo, or simply expressing an opinion, putting yourself out there means opening yourself up to judgment.

It’s much easier to criticize than it is to create.

Instead of looking for flaws, we can choose to encourage one another. A thoughtful comment or a few kind words can brighten someone’s entire day.

Don’t Let Negativity Silence You

If you are a writer, artist, blogger, or business owner, don’t allow negative comments to stop you from sharing your gifts. Every creator will eventually face criticism. What matters most is continuing to do the work you love.

The people who appreciate your work will continue to find you.

Be the Voice That Encourages

The internet needs more people who build others up instead of tearing them down. Before posting a comment, ask yourself:

  • Is it kind?
  • Is it helpful?
  • Is it necessary?

Those three questions can make a tremendous difference.

Final Thoughts

Words have power. They can inspire hope, offer comfort, or leave lasting wounds. Let’s choose to use our words to encourage, support, and uplift others. The world has enough negativity already.

We can all help make the online community a little brighter, one kind comment at a time.

Have you ever received a hurtful comment online? How did you handle it? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

With love and light,

Crystal Amon
