Which Fantasy Animal Would Be Your Familiar?

Have you ever wandered through a fantasy novel and thought, “That creature would totally be my magical sidekick”? Same. Whether you’re a witch, sorceress, dragon rider, or book-loving mortal, you’ve probably imagined having a powerful, loyal, slightly snarky familiar by your side.

So, what would your perfect fantasy familiar be? Let’s explore the possibilities and find your magical match.

1. The Dragon – Fierce, Loyal, and Majestic

If you’re bold, ambitious, and a little extra (in the best way), a dragon is your ride-or-die. They’re ancient, wise, and literally breathe fire at your enemies. If your aesthetic is “power queen in a spiked crown,” then your bond with a dragon is destined.

Signs the dragon is your familiar:

You love dramatic entrances You protect your people fiercely You’re always the main character

2. The Phoenix – Rebirth and Radiance

You’ve survived the flames and risen from the ashes. The phoenix is a creature of transformation, healing, and inner strength. If you’re someone who glows brighter after every challenge, this fiery bird mirrors your soul.

Signs the phoenix is your familiar:

You’ve reinvented yourself more than once You believe in second chances You’re known for your inner fire

3. The Shadow Cat – Stealthy and Mysterious

You walk the line between light and shadow. Quiet, graceful, and independent, the shadow cat knows when to strike and when to slip away unnoticed. If you value freedom and keep your secrets close, this sleek feline might be the one.

Signs the shadow cat is your familiar:

You’re intuitive and clever You’d rather observe before acting You enjoy your solitude (and look fabulous doing it)

4. The Unicorn – Pure Heart, Strong Magic

Magical, elegant, and a little misunderstood, unicorns are creatures of hope and healing. If you believe in love, kindness, and sparkly vengeance, this mythical steed will stand by your side through light and darkness.

Signs the unicorn is your familiar:

You’re the mom friend with a wild side You give second chances—but don’t forget You look innocent, but you pack a punch

5. The Griffin – Brave Guardian of Secrets

With the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle, the griffin is a noble protector. If you guard your circle like royalty and live by honor, this majestic beast is your spirit ally.

Signs the griffin is your familiar:

You’re fiercely loyal You speak your truth, even when it’s hard You’re the first to defend someone in need

6. The Fae Fox – Clever and Enchanted

Trickster energy, but make it enchanting. The fae fox is cunning, playful, and just a little chaotic. If you love stirring the pot, making your own rules, and dancing under moonlight, you two are a perfect pair.

Signs the fae fox is your familiar:

You’re clever with words (and looks) You thrive in mischief and magic You wear mystery like perfume

So, Which One Is Yours?

Let your intuition guide you—your familiar is the creature that feels like home. The one that reflects the truest, most magical parts of you.

I think my spirit animal is red dragon, I was born in the year of the dragon according to the Chinese astrological calendar and am Welsh and so love the Welsh dragon.. I am hard to anger but boy when I see red (which these days is like never), I don’t know how to temper my potential tantrum. I like to see myself these days as a wise old dragon that kind of try’s to not spay its flames left right and centre all over people.
