Most kids grow up afraid of the dark, clowns, or the monster under the bed.
But not me.
My childhood villain came with feathers, claws, and an attitude problem.
Granny had a rooster so mean, he could’ve been the president of the Barnyard Mafia.
This bird didn’t just walk around—he strutted like he collected rent from the other animals.
And honey, if you didn’t pay up? He’d chase you like he was coming for his money.
I was five or six, just trying to live my little life, when this rooster decided I was his personal hobby.
I couldn’t walk out in the yard without feeling like I was starring in a low-budget horror movie called
“Attack of the Psycho Rooster.”
I’d slowly push open that squeaky screen door, peek out, and pray he was somewhere minding his business.
Spoiler alert:
He was never minding his business.
The moment he saw me, his whole spirit lit up like, “Oh yes. Today’s the day.”
Next thing I knew—
FLAP FLAP FLAP!
SKREEEEEE!
And here I go sprinting across the yard like I was training for the Olympics, that rooster right behind me running full speed like I owed him child support.
I’d hit those porch steps in one leap, bust through the screen door, and jump straight onto my bed.
Didn’t matter if I was wearing shoes. Didn’t matter who was in the way.
Survival first, apologies later.
And don’t think it was just me.
This rooster terrorized everyone—the dogs, the cousins, the neighbors, probably even stray birds flying overhead.
Nobody was safe.
Unless your name was Granny.
For her, that rooster acted like a choir boy. He followed her around the yard calmly, looking up at her like,
“Yes ma’am, I’m blessed and highly favored.”
Meanwhile, I’m pressed against the window watching like:
THIS is the same demon bird that chased me into the house five minutes ago?
Granny used to say, “He don’t bother nobody.”
Ma’am…
I am NOBODY now?
To this day, every once in a while, I still dream about that rooster chasing me.
I guess some childhood memories never fully leave—they just hide in your subconscious waiting to jump out like:
“Remember me?”
Honestly, that rooster is probably somewhere in bird heaven right now… still looking for me.
With love and light,
Crystal Amon
