Recently, I had the opportunity to work with a new writer—let’s call her Emily. She reached out to me through my website, feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to begin. Like many aspiring writers, she had a deep love for storytelling but struggled with confidence. She didn’t know how to turn that passion into something real.
✍️ Starting From Scratch
When we began working together, Emily admitted she’d never shared her writing with anyone. She was afraid of being judged, of “not being good enough,” and of failing before she even started.
We began with the basics—talking about her goals, identifying what kind of writing lit her up, and breaking through the mental blocks that were holding her back. I reviewed her first draft of a short story and sent her detailed feedback—not to criticize, but to encourage and guide.
It wasn’t perfect. It didn’t need to be. What mattered most was that it was hers—and she was brave enough to put it out there.
🌱 Watching Growth Happen
Week by week, I saw Emily grow. She started revising her stories with more confidence. She asked thoughtful questions. She even began outlining her first blog series—a personal project she’d been dreaming about for years but never dared to pursue.
Watching her transformation reminded me why I mentor. It’s not about creating “perfect” writers. It’s about helping people believe they can write—and that their stories matter.
🤝 Why Mentorship Matters
For so many new writers, the hardest part isn’t the writing—it’s the fear. Fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of not being “good enough.” That’s why I offer mentorship: to help quiet that fear and replace it with encouragement, structure, and practical tools to grow.
As someone who’s been a freelance writer for over 23 years, I’ve had my fair share of rejections, self-doubt, and late nights staring at a blinking cursor. But I’ve also experienced the incredible reward of finishing a piece, connecting with readers, and building a career I love. And I want others to feel that joy, too.
