What to Feed A Green Cheek Conure

Max and Scarlet

After getting A free cheek conure, I had to research a proper diet. This way, I can make sure they are happy and healthy. Additionally, I needed to make sure I was feeding it a balanced diet. I learned that the right foods are essential for a green cheek conure overall well-being. Here are some of the best foods to include:

1. Pellets: High-quality pellets should make up around 60-70% of their diet. Look for brands specifically formulated for conures or small parrots, as these offer balanced nutrition with the vitamins and minerals they need.

2. Fresh Vegetables: Conures love a variety of veggies! Offer them dark, leafy greens like kale, spinach, and dandelion greens, as well as bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, and squash. Avoid feeding them onions, garlic, or avocado, as these can be toxic.

3. Fruits: Fresh fruits are a treat for conures but should be given in moderation because of their high sugar content. Safe fruits include apples (remove the seeds), berries, oranges, mango, papaya, and banana.

4. Grains and Legumes: Cooked whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and oats, along with beans and lentils, are great sources of protein and fiber. Make sure beans are thoroughly cooked, as some raw beans are toxic to birds.

5. Nuts and Seeds: Conures enjoy seeds and nuts, but they should be given sparingly, as they are high in fat. A few sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or small pieces of almonds or walnuts can be a treat.

6. Calcium Source: Conures benefit from calcium-rich foods, so you might consider offering a cuttlebone in their cage. They can also get calcium from certain veggies, like broccoli, or you can sprinkle calcium powder (from a pet store) onto their food occasionally.

7. Avoid Junk Foods: Keep conures away from processed human foods, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and anything too salty, sweet, or greasy. These can be harmful to them.

Provide fresh water daily, and make sure to wash all fruits and vegetables before feeding. Also, variety is key, so rotate their foods to keep them interested and ensure they get a balanced diet.
