My adopted daughter asked me this question yesterday, so I did some research. Guinea pigs squeal, or “wheek,” to communicate various needs and emotions. Here are some common reasons they make this noise:
1. Hunger or Excitement: A loud squeal often means they’re excited, especially when they hear food being prepared or see their favorite treats. It’s their way of saying, “Feed me!”
2. Attention-Seeking: Guinea pigs are social animals and may squeal to get your attention, whether they want to be petted, held, or simply noticed.
3. Discomfort or Fear: Sometimes a high-pitched squeal indicates that they are scared, in pain, or feeling threatened. This squeal is generally louder and more intense, signaling that something is wrong.
4. Communication with Other Guinea Pigs: When living with other guinea pigs, they squeal to communicate with each other, whether it’s to establish boundaries, show affection, or signal playtime.
Observing the context of their squealing can help you understand what your guinea pig is trying to tell you.
