I started noticing that Oakley was eating her poop today and freaked out. I began asking questions on Google, about why she is doing this weird behavior. The answer was, Yes, guinea pigs do eat some of their own poop, specifically a type called cecotropes, which are soft, nutrient-rich droppings.
This weird behavior, known as coprophagy, is common in many small animals, like rabbits and guinea pigs, and is essential for their health. Cecotropes contain important nutrients, like B vitamins and fiber, that weren’t fully absorbed the first time through digestion. Therefore re-eating them allows guinea pigs to get the most nutrition from their food.
It’s a normal and healthy behavior, so if you see your guinea pig eating these droppings, there’s no need for concern—it’s just a natural part of their digestive process! Now, I am not worried when I see her do this. Thank you, Google for answering my question and letting me know that it’s normal.
