How to Create The Best Living Environment for a Guinea Pig

Oakley

I recently bought a Guinea Pig for my adopted daughter and we bought a huge cage, which the pet store associate said was easy to put together . Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the cage together so we put her in a large dog cage. However, she figured out hot to get out the dog cage, so now she is in a large children’s play yard.

Oakley’s Cage

Luckily, she cannot get out of her area and she loves the overall environment. We have incorporated all that she needs in the play yard like: a bowl for her pellets, a water bottle, a box cut into a home, a salt lick, and a hay feeder. This list will help you ensure that your guinea pig’s living environment will promote their overall happiness and well-being.

Space

  • Cage Size: Provide a spacious cage that allows your guinea pig to move around freely. A minimum of 7.5 square feet is recommended for one guinea pig.

Enrichment

  • Toys and Hiding Spots: Include various toys, tunnels, and hiding spots in the cage. This encourages natural behaviors, reduces boredom, and provides mental stimulation.
  • Social Interaction: Ensure they have companionship, as guinea pigs are social animals. Keeping them in pairs or groups can enhance their mood and reduce stress.

Comfort

  • Bedding: Use soft, absorbent bedding to keep the cage comfortable. Avoid cedar or pine shavings, which can be harmful.
  • Temperature: Maintain a comfortable temperature (65°F to 75°F) and avoid direct sunlight or drafts.

Nutrition

  • Fresh Food: Provide a balanced diet consisting of hay, fresh vegetables, and high-quality pellets. Fresh water should always be available.

Cleanliness

  • Regular Cleaning: Clean the cage at least once a week and spot clean daily to remove soiled bedding and uneaten food.

By focusing on these key areas, you can create a safe, engaging, and loving environment that promotes the happiness and well-being of your guinea pig. You can also let your Guinea Pig run free in your home for several hours a day, because they are pretty easy to catch. We let Oakley run around our home and she loves it!
