Best Foods for Guinea Pig

Oakley and Me

Guinea pigs need a well-balanced diet to stay healthy. This diet should mainly consisting of high-quality hay, fresh vegetables, and a limited amount of pellets. Here’s a list of foods that a Guinea Pig should have in their diet.

1. Hay

Timothy hay is essential and should be available at all times. It helps with their digestion and keeps their teeth healthy.

Orchard grass or meadow hay are good alternatives.

• Avoid alfalfa hay for adult guinea pigs as it’s too high in calcium, which can lead to bladder stones.

2. Pellets

• Choose high-quality pellets made specifically for guinea pigs, as they contain Vitamin C, which guinea pigs cannot produce on their own.

• Look for pellets with no added seeds, nuts, or dried fruits (these are high in fat and sugar).

3. Vegetables

Daily: Leafy greens like romaine lettuce, kale, parsley, and cilantro.

Occasionally: Bell peppers, carrots, cucumber, zucchini, and small amounts of tomatoes.

Avoid: Iceberg lettuce (too watery), potatoes, onions, garlic, and rhubarb (these are toxic).

4. Fruits

• Fruits should be offered sparingly due to their high sugar content. Small pieces of apple (without seeds), banana, blueberry, and orange are safe treats in moderation.

5. Supplements

• Vitamin C supplements can be given if needed. However, vegetables high in Vitamin C, like bell peppers, should usually meet their requirements.

6. Water

• Fresh, clean water should always be available in a sipper bottle or bowl, changed daily.

Foods to Avoid:

• Avoid processed foods, chocolate, dairy, meat, seeds, nuts, and iceberg lettuce, as they are harmful to guinea pigs.

To keep your Guinea Pig healthy, be sure to give them well-balanced diet. This will help keep your guinea pig happy and healthy for years to come. As you try different foods, you will find out what foods that they like the most!
