Living With Drop Foot

AFO Braces

About three years ago, I learned from my doctor that I had a neurological condition called drop foot. This medical condition makes it hard to walk without falling because your toes drop and trip you. My doctor said it is caused by neuropathy, which may be related to my diabetes or my aggressive cervical cancer treatment.

My doctor ordered me special AFO braces, which can be uncomfortable at times. They start at my shin and come down the bottom of my feet. These braces actually help me walk a lot better, but I still have a hard time sometimes because of balance.

I wear my braces every day, whenever I’m awake or walking around the house. Sometimes, I have a hard time walking without the braces at night. Especially, in the middle of the night when I’m getting up to go to the bathroom.

Three years ago, I broke my right leg and now I have metal rods in my leg as well. I am doing better every day, but I still need help doing some house chores. Thankfully, I have put a good support system in place since getting the diagnosis.
